Something about "Tor Ghee"

We have this tradition in our family called "Tor Ghee" in our family, where we remembered our ancestors during the 7th mth. This year we had two prayers. One on the 6th and one on the 16th of Aug for our ah gong and ah po respectively. This is a age old tradition in the family. I heard from the elders that previously ah po forbided all her daughters and son-in-laws to participate in these prayers. However, this tradition has been changed according to third aunt. On ah po's prayer, all her daugthers and son-in-laws are present. The sons were present. Third uncle could not make it as he was on night shift the night before.

Though tradition has "bent" according to time, but some things has not changed. While the women are busy preparing the food in the kitchen, the men stayed in the living room reading papers.

This year, we have 2 suckling pigs for prayers, courtesy from second uncle and third aunt.


After the prayers, the folks all gathered at the living room for lunch.

There is something common trait underlying all traditions in this family. It is occasion when all the family members get together for a common cause. This is one thing that the younger generation must emulate. We must stay united as a family. Another lesson learnt is tradition can be "bent" We need to be flexible. : )
